What Counts as an Electrical Emergency
Not every electrical problem needs someone out that night, and knowing the difference saves both money and worry. These are the situations where you should be calling straight away rather than waiting.
- Burning smells, smoke or scorch marks - Any sign of heat around outlets, switches, fittings or the switchboard needs immediate attention. This is the most serious category.
- Sparking or arcing - Visible sparks from an outlet, switch or switchboard mean the fault is active and the risk of fire is real.
- A switchboard that is hot, buzzing or discoloured - The switchboard is where faults concentrate, and heat or noise there is a warning sign.
- Safety switches that will not reset - A safety switch tripping repeatedly is doing exactly what it was installed to do. Forcing it back on is not a fix.
- Exposed, damaged or fallen wiring - Particularly after storms, fallen limbs or machinery contact. Never approach a fallen powerline.
- Complete power loss on a property that depends on it - Where water supply, refrigeration, cool rooms or livestock systems are down, the clock is running.
- Off-grid system failure - An inverter or battery fault on an off-grid property means no supply at all, not a partial outage.
- Water contact with electrical equipment - Flooding, roof leaks into a switchboard, or water ingress into outdoor gear.
Common Causes of Rural Power Failures
The faults we get called to on rural properties tend to look different from suburban ones. Distance, weather, older infrastructure and heavy machinery all play a part.
Storm and Lightning Damage
Storms are the single biggest driver of emergency callouts. Direct strikes damage inverters, controllers and appliances, while surges travel in from the network side. Falling limbs bring down consumer mains and shed feeds.
Ageing Infrastructure
A lot of rural properties are running switchboards and wiring installed decades ago, sometimes with layers of additions on top. Old wiring, undersized cabling and corroded connections eventually fail, often under summer load.
Off-Grid System Faults

What to Do While You Wait
Keep Clear of Anything Damaged
People and animals stay away from damaged switchboards, burnt fittings and fallen lines. Treat every fallen powerline as live.
Isolate the Power If It Is Safe
If the main switch is dry, undamaged and safe to reach, turn it off. If the switchboard is wet, hot, sparking or damaged, do not touch it.
Check Whether It Is a Network Outage
On grid-connected properties, see whether neighbours have power and check your network provider’s outage page. If the fault is on their side, they handle it and there is no callout needed.
Unplug Sensitive Equipment
Disconnect computers, control gear and expensive appliances so they are protected from the surge when supply comes back, especially after storm activity.
Call With Clear Details
Describe what happened, what you have isolated, and whether the property is off-grid. On a remote property, the difference between a first-trip fix and a return visit is usually the quality of that first phone call.

- Regular switchboard inspections - Heat, corrosion and loose connections are visible long before they cause a failure.

- Keeping a working generator - A backup generator that is tested regularly is very different from one that has been sitting untouched for two years.

Is the fault my responsibility or the network provider’s?
Broadly, faults on the network side of the connection point are the provider’s responsibility and everything on the property side is yours. If neighbours have power and you do not, the fault is usually on your property.
